Alan “Al” Douglas Lindsley, known to some as “Big Al”, age 75, passed away at his home on July 5, 2025, after a courageous 16-year battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).
Born on January 12, 1950, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Alan was the youngest son of Richard and Clara Lindsley. He graduated from Granger High School in 1968. He married Carol Ramsay on June 21, 1969, and together they raised three children: Lisa, Joe, and John. Though Alan and Carol later divorced, they remained united in their love for their family.
Alan was proud of the fact that he never went a single day without being employed since graduating from high school. He started a snow removal business in 1972 with his brother, Ronnie. Alan worked 33 years for the Salt Lake City Parks Department, retiring in 2000. He then worked for Lake Rockport Estates as a project manager until he retired again in early 2024. Additionally, he worked for Granite School District for 18 years, maintaining the 10 acres of grass at Vista Elementary during the summer months.
A true outdoorsman at heart, Alan enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and anything outdoors. He was the one who had everything you needed, and the things you didn’t realize you wanted. Late nights around the campfires, he was always the last one standing, putting out the flames. In his later years, he developed a deep interest in family genealogy and spent countless hours uncovering the stories of those who came before him. Nothing made him happier than cheering from the sidelines at his grandchildren’s sporting events—whether it was baseball, soccer, cheerleading, dance, or basketball, Alan was their biggest fan.
Alan was known for his quick wit, even in the most difficult moments. He had a gift for making others laugh—even cracking jokes in stressful or sad situations that somehow made things feel a little lighter. His sense of humor never wavered, even during his cancer treatments. He often joked around with his doctors and nurses, who were always delighted to see him walk through the door. He once said that if he didn’t feel the side effects of his treatments, he probably wasn’t getting his money’s worth. Remarkably, through it all, Alan never complained—his laughter and warmth brought comfort to many.
Alan’s love of nature, resilience, quiet strength, and sense of humor will be remembered and deeply missed. Love Ya!
Alan is survived by his three children Lisa (Jason) Jackman, Joe (Aimee) Lindsley, and John (Jenny) Lindsley; eight grandchildren who brought him immense joy Tayvia (Tristin), Julia, Niko, Bella, Aspen, Mateo, Roman, and Boden; his sister Bonnie (Gibbs) Murdock (nephew Robert Murdock); sister-in-law Becky Lindsley (nephews Darren and Danny Lindsley); and beloved companion and loyal dog, Buddy. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Ronald, his granddaughter Ivie, two nieces, Theresa & Melody, and his faithful dog Copper.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at the Jon and Karen Huntsman Cancer Center, especially Dr. William E. Nibley, for their compassionate care and support throughout our dad’s journey. We are also deeply grateful to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, whose financial assistance since 2009 has helped ease the burden of treatment costs and made a meaningful difference in our dad’s care.
A private family service was held on July 11, 2025. Interment was at Memorial Redwood Estates. A gathering for family and friends will be held to celebrate Alan’s life on September 6, 2025, at Rockport State Park in Wanship, Utah. To assist with planning, we kindly ask that you email AlanMemorial0906@gmail.com if you plan to attend or would like additional details.
In memory of Alan, and in honor of his long and courageous fight, donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Your support will help ease the financial burden for others facing similar battles and fund continued research and patient assistance. https://diy.lls.org/fundraiser/6499437
