Alan Oren Melchior

June 11, 1947 — May 20, 2025

Alan Oren Melchior, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, and lifelong entrepreneur, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, at the age of 77. Born in Henderson, Texas, in 1947, he was the son of Ovesa Pearlmaud “Bea” Melchior and I.J. Melchior and made his home in Holladay, Utah, where he built a life full of family, adventure, and accomplishment.

In his young adulthood, Alan earned a Bachelor of Science from Brigham Young University in 1971 and went on to receive a Master of Business Administration (with an emphasis in Finance) from the University of Utah in 1974. Early in his career, he worked with companies like Procter & Gamble and O.C. Tanner before stepping into entrepreneurship. Alan found particular success developing geothermal power plants in Steamboat, Nevada, and later became a hotel and property developer, work he continued until the end of his life. He was a natural entrepreneur—curious, driven, and never afraid to take bold steps.

When Alan heard “It can’t be done,” he simply said, “Watch me.” Challenges weren’t barriers—they were invitations. With bold determination and creative drive, he turned obstacles into a legacy of purpose and possibility. Alan instilled his unwavering “can-do” attitude in each of his children, with all of them following in his entrepreneurial footsteps.

Beyond his professional achievements, Alan was a man of wide-ranging interests and boundless energy. He was an accomplished pilot and avid sailor, and he had a passion for collecting antique cars, motorcycles, pocket watches, and firearms. He loved dirt biking, scuba diving, flying remote-control airplanes, and exploring anything that captured his imagination. He lived life with gusto and curiosity, always learning, always doing. But above all else, Alan loved his family.

Alan was deeply devoted to his beloved wife, Lydia Dean Melchior, and took immense pride in their life together. He was the father of Justin (Sarah), JanEllen (Glen), Falon (Mircea), Andrew (Shannon), and Bryan (Marie). He was also a proud grandfather and great-grandfather and a friend to many.

In his final chapter, Alan embraced his faith. Over the course of his life, he came to understand that what mattered most was not what he built, but the God who shaped him—and the love he shared with those around him. He faced the end with a Christian heart, surrounded by his loved ones and confident in the promise that we would see each other again.

A viewing with the family will be held at Southeast Christian Church, 1881 E Vine St, Murray, Utah 84121, on Monday, June 2, 2025, beginning at 10:00 a.m., with funeral services following at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Memorial Mountain View Cemetery, 3115 Bengal Blvd, Cottonwood Heights, Utah 84121.

Alan lived a rich and adventurous life, fueled by curiosity, a love for his many hobbies, and a tireless drive that led to great success in business—but above all, he will be remembered for the joy he found in the journey and the love he gave along the way.
