Alvin Thomas Cottrell

Alvin Thomas Cottrell passed away December 30, 2023 at the age of 69 in his home of South Jordan, Utah surrounded by family. He was born on June 26,1954 in Salt Lake City to his parents Dannell George Cottrell and Glena Adeline Bradshaw. 

Alvin grew up in Murray, Utah with his three siblings Brent, Brad, and Arla. During his adolescence, he had a paper route with his brother Brad and enjoyed participating in scouting, earning his Eagle Scout award. 

Alvin graduated from Murray High School in 1972. He then went on to faithfully serve a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Denver Colorado Mission from the year 1973-75. Alvin married the love of his life, Sharon Marta Nausin in the Salt Lake Temple on December 20, 1976, and later had two sons, Trever and Robert. He studied accounting at the University of Utah and Westminster College, where he graduated with a BS in Accounting in 1986. Alvin loved accounting and worked for the Murray DI doing bookkeeping and accounting. He then transitioned to Bonneville International Corporation for over 30 years as an accounting tax treasurer.

Alvin loved his Savior Jesus Christ and faithfully served in many callings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Alvin enjoyed being on a committee to write a priesthood manual.  He served as Elders Quorum President, Bishopric Counselor, High Councilor, Stake Executive Secretary, Bishop, and Stake Presidency Counselor.  He also loved serving as an ordinance worker in the Oquirrh Mountain Temple.  Alvin and Sharon served both as Inner-City Missionaries in Salt Lake City and as Senior Missionaries in Portland, Oregon. They also served as Stake Missionaries in the South Jordan Utah Highland Stake. 

Alvin loved being a dad to his two boys, taking them to many live sporting events and made it a point to be in their lives and take interest in their hobbies.  Alvin taught them the value of serving others and taught them the value of work. Grabbing burgers with his sons was an all time favorite activity of his. He also loved his two daughters-in-law and six grandchildren, and always had a way to make them feel special and loved.

Alvin had many hobbies that he enjoyed, including gardening, keeping his lawn as green as possible, dutch oven cooking, reading books and keeping up with the newest technology of the time. He would spend hours figuring the new technology out. He also loved to travel with family and especially with his wife Sharon.  He loved her, and throughout their 47 years of marriage, Alvin always made sure she was taken care of.

Alvin endured many health problems during his lifetime, but he endured them with a good attitude and a great sense of humor. He was great at making conversation and loved to make people laugh. Alvin was famous for his jokes, rarely failing to tell one if he talked to you.  Seeing people smile certainly made him happy. Alvin was the best husband, father, son, and brother anyone could ask for. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Dannell and Glena Cottrell and his father-in-law Raymond Nausin.  Alvin is survived by his dear wife Sharon and his two sons, Trever (Diane) Cottrell, Robert (Lindsay) Cottrell and his six grandchildren, Haley, Emily, Kylie, Chase, Carly, and Logan. He is also survived by his two brothers, Brad Cottrell and Brent (Ranonne) Cottrell, his sister Arla (Jeff) Porter, his mother-in-law Norma Nausin, and many other in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank all the people who cared for him during his time in hospice care and especially the people who worked for Home Instead.  They really became his friends.  We would also like to thank his wife Sharon, who stood by his side and was his main caregiver until the end. We are going to miss Alvin, but we are all so grateful that we knew him. He made our world a better place.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel at 10115 South Yorkshire Drive, South Jordan, Utah 84009. Viewings will be held, Monday, January 8, 2024 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Memorial Redwood Mortuary, 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah 84123 and at from 10:00-10:45 a.m., at the church before the services. Interment will be at Memorial Redwood Cemetery following services.
