Ana Fifita Makihele Suliafu passed away early Friday morning, December 16, 2022, at age 94. Ana was born in Haalaufuli, Vava’u, Tonga, to Sione Makihele Hetau and Kiti Ilisipeta Tongo on December 28, 1927. Her life and history took her from Tonga at age 23 to New Zealand where she lived for 30 years. She married John Unga Papalangi Suliafu in Auckland, New Zealand, later solemnizing their marriage in the Hamilton, New Zealand Temple.
Ana and John came to the U.S. in 1977 where she had lived for over 45 years. From her living room in Salt Lake City, Ana reminisced with her family about her treasured childhood and recalled growing up on her father’s plantation in Tonga, where there were no homeless and no rich or poor. The land provided everything which taught her to live simply in New Zealand and the U.S.
Ana and John’s house was always full of grandchildren–boys and girls swarming around the basketball hoop and younger children playing in the front yard. She loved her heritage, and her family was everything to her.
Ana left a long legacy of service to others, kindness and charity to those in need, a loving example of humility, and a cheeky sense of humor.
Ana is survived by her children, Priscilla (Todd) Dehlavi, Daniel (Linda) Suliafu, Elvis (Elizabeth) Suliafu, Betty (Paul) Brown, and David Suliafu. She is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
