Barbara Mae Weeks Snyder Traver Liedtke
Passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 1, 2022. Barbara lived a rich, full life: ninety-five years of caring, kindness and giving to everyone she knew. She touched many lives. She was our rock, our guiding light, our example of how to be.
Mom was the first of 4 children born to Loren Weeks and Orma Peterson Weeks in Loveland, Colorado on June 23,1927. She spent her childhood years in Nebraska with sister LaDonna, brother Darrell and best friend and cousin Marjorie White Day before moving to the dust bowl of northwest Kansas, and then returning to Colorado for junior high and the beginning of high school. The family moved again in 1942 bringing her to Utah where her baby brother Gene was born; she attended South High School and worked as a nanny then rode the bus to her job at a local bakery.
Barbara married Aldon Veon Snyder (the bus driver) on February 11,1946.
Ten years her senior, Al had two sons from a previous marriage: Jay W. and Veon A. As an 18 year old bride she embraced her ready made family with open arms, trying diligently to corral and nurture 4 and 5 year old brothers that had energy to burn. Babs and Al had 3 children together: Cindy Sue, Randy Alan and Gary Evan. They resided in South Salt Lake where Barbara was active in the PTA, serving as vice-president, secretary and treasurer while her children were in elementary school. Along with her husband she succeeded in creating a happy, welcoming home environment for her children, their friends and any family that happened by to play Pinochle, Password or just visit over coffee. She worked at the Mode O’Day dress factory for over 10 years. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 26 years on June 3, 1972, widowed the first time at age 44.
On March 1, 1975 she married Charles (Pete) Traver, adding extended family and experiences into her open heart. Pete passed away on March 4, 1983.
Barbara was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by her son Gary on May 29, 1980, the night before he departed for his mission to Brazil. She loved serving in the library and did so for many years.
Around this same time Mom attended night school, proudly attaining her GED after having dropped out of high school to help care for infant baby brother. She was very proud of this achievement although humble, as was her nature.
On January 17, 1985 she married Paul M. Liedtke: more opportunity to unconditionally love additional family. They were married until his death on March 15, 2012.
Mom loved to travel. Although her travel history was not to exotic faraway places she thrived on experiencing new adventures. From making sure her children experienced Disneyland in California, to visiting her parents in Colorado, her brothers in Florida and Georgia, her step-son in Las Vegas or her now grown sons in Arizona, Colorado or Washington State she wanted to see everything. If Dad was golfing in Nevada or Idaho or Utah she turned the trip into a vacation, making sure we saw Lehman Caves in Baker, Nevada; rode horses in Midway, Utah or swam at Lava Hot Springs, Idaho. Whether by bus, train, plane or car she embraced it all.
She is survived by her loving and grateful children and their significant others, her 19 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, her brother Gene and cousin Margie; as well as stepfamilies, in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends too numerous to list here. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister LaDonna and her brother Darrell. She outlived many but never forgot them.
The family wishes to thank the kind and loving staff at Cove Point Retirement Community for their tireless care and helpful guidance over the last 8 years: Sissy, you and your staff are phenomenal. We will always be grateful.
Thank you also to Mom’s hospice caregivers. McKenna, Melissa and Lovette: your knowledge, kindness and empathy are greatly appreciated.
All our thanks to her wonderful physical therapist Coleby, for your kind and consistent efforts to help Mom live better physically and thus emotionally and spiritually.
