Bertha Lee Golding, a devoted mother, educator, grandmother, and pillar of faith, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026, at the age of 80. A woman genuinely loved by many, Bertha's life was a vibrant map of service, family, and unwavering devotion to God.

A Life of Leadership and Learning

Born on March 16, 1945, in Bryan, Texas, Bertha was the eldest daughter of ten children born to Essie Lee Davenport and Benjamin M. Hawkins. As the firstborn daughter, she naturally stepped into the role of caregiver and leader—a mantle she wore gracefully for the rest of her life.

Her passion for nurturing the next generation led to a distinguished career in early childhood education. For many years, she was a foundational presence at Head Start Preschool, helping shape the earliest years of countless children. Her influence was particularly felt within her spiritual community, from Ebenezer to Griffin Memorial Church of God in Christ, where she served as the Sunshine Band President for many years. In this role, she guided young hearts toward faith with the same warmth and wisdom she shared with her own family. Additionally, Bertha was influential as an evangelist missionary and particularly excelled as a prayer warrior, interceding not only for her family but also for many others, leading them to the throne of God for breakthrough and revelation.

A Legacy of Faith

Bertha’s life was the living embodiment of her ministry theme, Matthew 5:16: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Her light was indeed bright, steady, and felt by everyone who crossed her path.

Family Bonds

Bertha was preceded in death by both parents, Ben Hawkins and Essie Lee Davenport, along with her husband, Elder William Golding. She was also preceded in death by four of her beloved brothers, Milan Hawkins Sr., TX; Charlie J. Hawkins, UT; Donnell Moore, KS; and Larry Sears, OK.

Bertha’s legacy of love continues through her four children:

• Ralph Andrew Clark III and Ronald Scott Clark of Salt Lake City, Utah

• Terry Wise-Clark of Alpine, Utah

• Tabaitha Cherry-Rose and her husband, Steven Rose, of Killeen, Texas

She is survived by her sisters, Wilma Moore-Black, KS, Carol Sears, TX, and Margaret Annette Sears, TX; and her brothers, Johnny Lee and Willie James Sears, both of KS. Her memory will be cherished by a vast host of grandchildren, nephews, nieces, extended family, and dear friends.
