Bette Ruth Austin passed away on July 15, 2026, due to heart failure following surgery complications at the Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah.
She was born October 30, 1947, in Silver City, New Mexico to the late Louis Robert LaChance and Dorothy May Yates. She was married to Rolla Eugene Austin, the love of her life for 61 years, on September 28, 1965.
Bette was the heart and soul of her family, an endlessly supportive wife and sister, and a mother to all. Family was the most important thing in her life, and she was the first to listen and give advice, even if it wasn’t what you wanted to hear. She was honest and loved everyone unconditionally, and with her entire self. Bette was resilient and a hard worker; her house and garden were her sanctuary, and she kept a beautiful home where anyone was welcome to stay when they needed it. She loved scrapbooking and keeping memories close; she’d talk for hours about the past and her loved ones. She loved family parties, especially on Halloween and Christmas, and always made it fun and engaging and spoiled her family rotten. She loved to play all sorts of games and puzzles and was especially good at word games. She was clever and witty and funny. Bette was also a spiritual leader and had an extremely close relationship with our savior, Jesus Christ. She loved the Church and longed to be in the Temple whenever she could, where she felt closest to God. She believed in service to others, in lending a helping hand, and above all, she believed in love.
In addition to her parents, Bette is preceded in death by her brothers, Leo Griffin and Raymond Griffin, and her sisters, Irene Newton and Joan Marriot, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Bette is survived by her husband, Rolla Eugene Austin, children Jeannie Lopez (Roy), Cary Austin (Julie), Craig Austin, Shalea Yarrington (Kevin), Serria Haupfleisch (Matt), and Echo Barker (Jaromy) , 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. By her brother, Robert Louis LaChance (Leslie) and her sister, Brenda Louise Krans (Ray), many nieces and nephews and so many other kids from the neighborhood she’d pulled into her family and home.
The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, July 22nd at 11:00 A.M. at the Memorial Redwood Mortuary, 6500 South Redwood Road West Jordan, Utah 84123.
