Our loving father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Bill Gust Drossos, left us on October 15, 2022. He was born February 23, 1930 to Gust and Artemis Drossos in Bingham Canyon, Utah.
The only child of Greek immigrants, Bill grew up in Bingham Canyon where he learned the value of hard work from an early age. After graduating from Bingham High School, he served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning home he graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in elementary education and taught for 8 years. He earned his Master’s Degree and was a public-school administrator for 28 years, the majority of those years in the Jordan School District.
He met Sophia Kapos and they were married in June, 1956 together they raised three children. An avid fisherman and gardener, he loved the outdoors and served as a US Forest Ranger for many years. In their later years, Bill and Sophia enjoyed playing cards and traveling all over the world with various groups of friends.
Education was very important to Bill and after retiring he worked as an administrator to local public elementary schools and at the St. Sophia School.
He was also part of many educational organizations, NEA, ACE, JEA, PTA, and many others, he was an officer in many of them. He continued many of these friendships well into retirement. A 30 year veteran of the Boy Scouts of America, and helped start the Greek Troop 555.
He was a member of many civic and community organizations in Midvale. While Bill made friends everywhere, he always put family first. He encouraged and helped all his children and grandchildren to succeed and do their best. He helped care for his elderly parents in their later years and served as godfather to dozens of children.
He loved his Greek Orthodox faith and Greek heritage. Bill served as vice president on the Parish Council, was a member of the Panahaikos Society, President of AHEPA, and was a Greek Festival chair. Bill was a trustee and vice president of the Hellenic Cultural Association. He helped launch the Greek historical organization and set up a museum that showcased Utah’s Greek history.
