Bob Kazutaka Sugino, 94, passed away peacefully on May 1st, 2025, in Salt Lake City, Utah, due to natural causes. Bob was born in Seattle, Washington, on July 12th, 1930, to Mitsuye and Kizo Sugino.
Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Akiko, and his sons Dale and Gary. He is survived by two sons, Alan and Mike, his grandchildren Christopher, Kimi, Dalani, Mya, and Corinne, and his great-grandchildren Kyle, Rowen, and Adam. He had many nieces and nephews whom he loved immensely, including the Kanegae family, with whom he had an especially close bond.
Bob had a character like nobody else. He was sweet, funny, and often endearingly stubborn. But above all, Bob will be remembered for his boundless love for other people. Together for 63 years, he loved his wife Akiko with all of his being. When she was diagnosed with the rare brain disease Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), he cared for her for over a decade and never left her side. He loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren deeply, with the shelves in his home overflowing with photographs and videos of their memories together. He was immensely proud of them and spoke of them often. When Bob moved to an Assisted Living facility in his nineties, he took the time to write down the names of every resident and caretaker he met so he could try to greet them personally each time he saw them. In these ways and so many others, Bob was the type of person you only meet once in a lifetime. He will be deeply missed, but his love lives on in the people he impacted.
Thank you to everyone who made an impact on Bob over the years, especially his family, friends, and the wonderful care teams at The Ridge Foothill and Ability Home Health and Hospice. As requested, Bob will be buried with his wife Akiko’s ashes at Salt Lake City Cemetery.
