Brent Alan Nelson passed away peacefully in his home on October 10, 2023, at the age of 77. Brent was born on November 12, 1945, in Salt Lake City, UT. He grew up in Sugar House where he had a wonderful and active childhood. He graduated from Highland High School and later graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Political Science.

He met the love of his life, Susan Smith, at the University of Utah and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1970. Together they created a wonderful life together and a home for eight children. The children consider their upbringing to be one composed of stimulating conversation, practical jokes, learning the joy of hard work and, most importantly, an upbringing that was supported by a loving father.   

Brent supported his family as a salesman for housewares until he changed careers to real estate where he built a successful business in homebuilding and development. His life’s work includes years of service including: serving in the National Guard, serving an LDS mission in Japan, serving again with his wife in the Jackson Mississippi Mission, as well as, serving as an LDS Bishop and in various church callings. Many of the services he rendered to individuals and the community will never be known because he preferred to help people anonymously.

Brent will always be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. He had a deep love of reading which was reflected in his gift to teach on any topic, especially the gospel.  He will be remembered for his ability to teach complex topics in a simple and straightforward way.  And everyone loved his many creative stories.

He is survived by his wife Susan Smith Nelson and his eight children: Kristine (Brady), John (Kristie), Michael, Kathleen (Thomas), Marcy (Rodney), Angela, Matthew (Cassie) and Mark. He has 31 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Brent was preceded in death by his parents; Lee and Una Barnes Nelson.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at the LDS chapel at 1410 E. Gentile Drive, Layton Utah 84040 (across from the new Layton Temple) at 11:00 am. A viewing will be held from 9:00 am to 10:30 am.

Interment will be at Memorial Lakeview Cemetery in Bountiful Utah-1640 E Lakeview Drive, Bountiful UT
