Carl Julius Chindgren passed away peacefully in his home January 20, 2011. He was born July 28, 1916 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Carl August Chindgren and Hannah Sophia Hulterstrom.
Carl was an avid skier. In his youth, he and his brother, Roy, rigged up an old motorcycle as a rope tow to get them up the mountain and could ski all day on a gallon of gas. He ski jumped competitively in high school and college. He talked about skiing and competing with Stein Erickson. Carl was one of the first jumpers to ski jump off Ecker hill, near the present site of the Olympic Nordic Park in Park City.
He graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in chemical engineering and worked as a metallurgist with the Federal Bureau of Mines for over 30 years. He loved his work, some of his work was published and he talked often about several explosions where he should have been seriously injured.
He married Helen Mae Shufelt in Boise, Idaho after a brief courtship of 4 weeks. They were happily married for 63 A
