Catherine Newman

Catherine Newman, of Salt Lake City, passed away peacefully February 3, 2009. Born June 2, 1925. Raised by her grandparents, LeRoy Neiley and Catherine Jane Johnson Strong in Midvale, UT. She graduated from Jordan High School, earned a B.S. from BYU and Masters from University of Oregon and attended UC Berkley. Life, travel, and learning were her zest. She added excitement to all her hobbies and outdoor life. She was an Educator and Administrator in the SLC School District, for 44 years 1948-84, teaching every grade, 7th to College courses. She was a leading member including serving as President of the Utah Teacher's Association. She was an active member in the Delta Kappa Gamma Society and the 49'ers Club. She was especially revered by her West High class of '48 and enjoyed many of their reunions. At retiring she served as a volunteer at the U of U Hospital in many dept. for 20 years. Our beautiful blue eyed Catherine will be missed by all her family and friends. A special thanks goes to those who served her so lovingly. In lieu of flowers make a donation to the Catherine Newman Teachers Scholarship Fund, University of Utah. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 6, 2009 at 12 noon, at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 S 2300 E, where friends and family may visit Thursday evening, February 5, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Friday morning from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. prior to the service.
