Charles passed away January 4, 2026 unexpectedly in Las Vegas, Nevada while with family. He now joins his eternal companion Cindy whom he had been missing for several years.
He was born February 18, 1956, in Wailuku, Maui as the third child, and oldest boy, of six siblings to Irving Andrew Johnson and Evalani Keaka Kaina Kuloloia. Charles made many wonderful memories growing up on Maui with his siblings Irvinette Lani Johnson Miller (Kaipo), Leinani Liane Johnson Kaya (Ransom) Peter Stan Johnson (deceased August11, 2023) (Patricia), Daryl Kalei Johnson (Melia), Harry Andrew Johnson (Lala). Before his eternal adventure with his wife, he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Greensboro, North Carolina where he experienced another culture and introduced him to mainland life. Growing up on Maui was always an adventure and that is where he met his wife. They were both attending BYU-Hawaii when they met serendipitously and were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on July 14, 1978. Before they had children they traveled around the country and Europe and they revisited some of those places with their children. Their furthest adventure took to them to Australia before his wife, after years of battling cancer, passed away.
While he was an accountant and helped many with their taxes, he loved being outdoors with his family, especially Lake Powell. There were many adventures not just on the lake but also to and from the beloved place. He also loved taking his boys ice fishing and having them participate in sports of all kinds. Many people knew of his love of golf, tennis, bowling and volleyball. While he was competitive, he was also a great teacher to anyone who wanted to try the sport for the first time.
His number one passion was his grandkids. The first one was born the same year his wife died and that gave him passion to live. Three more were born before he passed and he loved spending time with them each day. Some of those adventures include traveling to Las Vegas, the park, Wendy’s, and other places. He enjoyed going on walks with them while they rode their bikes and recently, he took them roller skating. The grandkids loved having adventures with their grandpa.
He was kind and warm with everyone he met, he loved being a door greeter at church. The kids loved how he interacted with them and the treats he would often give them would make them eager to see him the next. He was a great example and a light to those who met him and because of that influence many people will miss him. This extended into his callings as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served in the bishopric, nursery, young men’s and high council. He was a loving person to all he came across in those callings and beyond.
He is survived by his children Hikimai (Anne) Johnson and Caleb (Kaitlin) Johnson as well as his four mo’opuna (grandchildren) Zelena, Neal, Astrid and Killian.
He was preceded in death by his wife Cynthia Rae Sansom (July 22, 2018), his brother Peter Stan Johnson (August 11, 2023), and his parents Irving (June 6,1984) and Evalani (November 12, 2001) Johnson.
