Cheryl Evans Thornell

Cottonwood Heights, Utah

 

Cheryl Evans Thornell of Cottonwood Heights, UT, at the age of 83, passed away on December 17, 2023 at her home surrounded by her children. She was born on January 2, 1940, to William and Lola Evans in Mt Emmons, UT.

Cheryl was married to the love of her life, Peter G. Thornell on May 6, 1960, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. Her life was one of love, education, adventure, faith and service.

 

A lifelong learner, Cheryl graduated from the University of Utah, and devoted 20 years to teaching elementary school, enriching the lives of countless children. Her adventurous spirit led her to explore over 30 countries, embracing the world’s diversity and beauty.

Cheryl served her community selflessly, volunteering at the SLC LDS Temple for 13 years. She embodied humility, yet her heart overflowed with love and generosity. She exemplified courage, strength, perseverance, and love; impacting everyone she met.  

 

Cheryl enjoyed reading, playing the piano, sailing, bird watching, traveling, quilting, knitting, and watching her favorite sports teams. She championed every worthwhile endeavor of her children and grandchildren.

 

She is preceded in death by her husband, Peter G. Thornell; her parents, William and Lola Evans; her brothers, Don Evans and Steve Evans; her sister, Sheila Lind; her son, Allen Thornell; and her daughter-in-law, Donna Thornell. She leaves behind a cherished legacy through her children: CDR Mark Thornell, Ann McCoy (Chester), Sandy Combe (Kim), and Lisa Stephens (Todd), along with 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

 

There will be a public evening viewing on Wednesday, December 20th from 6pm-8pm held at Mountain View Memorial Estates located at 3115 East 7800 South Cottonwood Heights, Utah 84121

 

Funeral Services will be held at the Greenfield Chapel located at 6634 South Greenfield Way, Cottonwood Heights, Utah on Thursday, December 21st at 11:00am with a view prior starting at 9:30am. Interment will be at Mountain View Memorial Estates following the funeral services at 3115 East 7800 South Cottonwood Heights Utah 8421.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Utah Food Bank, a cause dear to Cheryl's heart.
