Cornelius “Case” Johannes Van Wyngaarden passed away peacefully on Sunday night after a long battle with dementia. Though our hearts are heavy with his loss, we find comfort in knowing he is finally free.
Born in Holland in 1947, Case immigrated to the United States with his parents at the age of three, carrying a deep pride in his Dutch heritage that stayed with him throughout his life. He attended Jordan High School and later graduated from the Weber State University with a Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Engineering.
At 18, Case was recruited into the U.S. Army, serving bravely during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1972. A true patriot, he embodied courage and resilience, and his service was a source of pride for him and his family.
In 1983, Case married the love of his life, Debra, on August 23. Over the next 42 years, they built a beautiful life together. Debra was his rock, his confidante, and his unwavering partner through life’s joys and challenges. Their devotion to each other inspired everyone who knew them.
A man of many passions, Case had a zest for life that was contagious. He loved music and shared this passion with his children, often taking them to concerts. His talent for restoring old cars to perfection was unmatched, and many cherished memories were made at car shows or in the garage with him.
Case’s sense of humor and playful spirit brightened the lives of everyone around him. He turned everyday moments into treasured memories. He sang the silly “poo poo” song when baby Conner needed a diaper change, made paper airplanes during church to entertain the kids, and transformed a jacket sleeve into a “periscope” to prank Jayden and Gavin, pouring water through it while they looked for stars. Whether working in the garage with Max, performing tricks for Jay to “turn” toy French fries into real ones, or fixing anything Mia needed, his humor and creativity made him larger than life.
Above all, family was Case’s greatest pride and joy. His children—Aaron, Tamara, Andy, Cory, Tiffany, and Trina—were the lights of his life, and his grandchildren lovingly called him “Opa.” He adored spending time with them, building go-carts, sharing laughter, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Case leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and laughter that will forever live on in all who knew him. Though our time with him was too short, we are endlessly grateful for the memories he gave us.
Rest in peace, Case. You will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.
