Daniel Joseph Merckens passed away on October 21, 2026 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born on April 25, 1958 in Shaker Heights, Ohio to Harvey William Merckens and Dolores Joan Merckens (nee Connolly).

Post high school in Florida, Dan was active in the citrus industry, but after moving to Salt Lake City, he especially loved his career as a truck driver and the time he spent hauling freight throughout the western United States.

Dan had a strong artistic side and would often be found playing his guitar. He also liked painting, particularly landscape scenes. He thoroughly enjoyed changing his profile picture on Facebook, continually a beaming sun, usually with a smiling face, and always adding his little twists to them.

He liked riding his ATV and dirt bike on trails in the mountains. Dan loved his dogs Peanut & Duke and they loved him.

Dan will be remembered for his quirky sense of humor and his penchant for drawing his thoughts onto family photos, making them into a whole new and often hilarious take on the subject. He loved to tinker in his workshop and make unique gifts. He also joyfully decorated his home for the holidays, hoping to elicit a smile from anyone passing by. He was kind and generous to a fault and his love of rescue dogs was his superpower. A contribution in his name to any animal shelter in any part of the country would make him extremely proud.

He is survived by his longtime friend Dee Bauer and her son John Bauer; his brothers Rory Merckens, Corolla, NC, and Tim Merckens, Atlanta, GA, along with his sister Meg Merckens-Johnson, Middle Amana, IA, and her husband Tom Johnson.

He is preceded in death by his parents Harvey & Dolores Merckens and his sister Pamela Merckens Hauserman.

A viewing will be held at Memorial Lake View Mortuary, 1640 East Lakeview Drive, Bountiful, Utah 84010 on Monday, November 2, 2026, at 11:00 – 11:45 a.m., with a graveside service following at 12:00 p.m.
