Darlene Sue (Haun) Sackett

Darlene Sue Sackett died September 27, 2015, in Salt Lake City at the age of 75, following a stroke. She was born in Miles City, Montana, on June 11, 1940, to Adolph and Maude Haun, the youngest of three sisters.  The family spent most of Darlene's school years in Billings, Montana.  It was there that she met her high school sweetheart, Gary Gordon Sackett, who became her husband on March 21, 1960.  In their 55 years of marriage, they were constant loving companions to one another, never spending more time apart than they absolutely had to.

Darlene and Gary both attended Montana State University as undergraduates, and continued to support each other's educational pursuits as they built their life together.  Darlene earned an MS degree from California State University at Fullerton in 1970, and a Master's of Social Work from the University of Utah in 1987.  Early in her career, Darlene taught high school mathematics in Placentia, California, and then worked as a bookkeeper when the family moved to Salt Lake City.  In her 40's, pursuing her desire to help others, Darlene became a social worker, spending many years as a case worker and as a supervisor at the Utah State Department of Family Services.

Darlene and Gary had many adventures travelling the world together, always at one another's side.  Over the past 25 years, they made a trip to a new place almost every year, and as of last year saw all seven continents.

Darlene was a devoted mother and grandmother and will be sorely missed.  She loved gardening, pampering the family cats, and was a voracious reader.

Darlene is survived by her husband Gary; daughter Kathryn of Corvallis, Oregon;  son Richard of Indianapolis; sister Luella Counts; grandchildren David, Fiona, Henry, William and Colin; and great-grandchildren Sophia and Vincent.  She is preceded in death by her parents and eldest sister Joan Holoubek.

A memorial service will be held at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, in Millcreek on Thursday, October 1 at 10 a.m.
