Our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, David Melvin Oveson, returned peacefully to his loving Heavenly Father on the morning of July 16th, 2026 at the age of 83.

David was born to Melvin Jarvis Oveson and Romania Jeanne Allred on March 7th, 1943 in Provo, Utah. As a young boy he loved learning new things, being with friends, and enjoyed earning money by doing his paper route on the streets of Provo. He attended Provo High School and graduated in 1961. A few years later while working in Salt Lake, David met his sweetheart, Geraldine Johnson, and they were married on June 18th, 1965. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1966. David adored Geraldine and together they had five girls. David loved his family and the teachings of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was passionate about gathering his children together every week for family home evenings and teaching the simple truths of the restored gospel.

David worked for the United States Postal Service for 30 years. He made lots of friends while working there and when they were not working, he enjoyed playing baseball with them at a nearby park. David retired from the United States Postal Service on August 1, 2000. In retirement, he enjoyed having time to spend with family and furthering his knowledge of the world around him. He worked for WCF for a time and also enjoyed learning new skills at Deseret Industries. Between 2012-2015, David and Geraldine had the opportunity to serve a mission on Temple Square and the nearby Conference Center. They absolutely loved the three years they were able to serve and the many people that they met. It was a time of pure joy for them.

David’s favorite thing was spending time with his family and visiting with friends. He had a contagious smile and laugh that made everyone happy, and frequently expressed gratitude for those that loved and served him. His sweet example of kindness, courage and patience will continue to bless the lives of his family and those who had the opportunity to know and love him. We look forward to the time we will be reunited again.

David is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Geraldine Johnson Oveson, his children, Sulyn Hill, Cindy (Justin) Smith, Darla (Jared) Shupe, and Holly Oveson; his grandchildren, May (Cory) Walters, Tanner & Reagan Shupe, and Madison James; along with three great grandchildren, Saige, Amara & March Walters. Also surviving are his siblings, Janet (Ray) Pickup, and Mark (Inger) Oveson. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Tammy Oveson; granddaughter, Rylee J. Shupe; sister, Cady Joy Gleave; son-in-law, William K. Hill; and parents, Melvin J. Oveson and Romania J. Allred Kosta.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, July 29th from 9:30-10:45 am, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am at the Memorial Mountain View Mortuary, 3115 E. Bengal Blvd., Cottonwood Heights, UT. Interment will follow the service at the Memorial Mountain View Cemetery
