David Raymond Spencer

David Raymond Spencer, 87, died on October 8, 2023, in Meadow Peak, Memory Care Unit, Taylorsville, UT surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 8, 1936, in Salt Lake City, UT to Joseph Raymond and Lucy Young Sanborn Spencer.

He married his sweetheart, Dawn Nichol who preceded him in death on July 12, 2016.

David grew up in East Millcreek, Utah, and graduated from Granite High School. David was a natural engineer and artistic talent. He worked as a mechanic in the Army and several car, motorcycle, and boat dealerships in the Salt Lake City area, retiring from Peterson Marine in Draper. David was active throughout his life in racing cars, motorcycles, and his sailboat. He was a member of the Great Salt Lake Yacht Club. He enjoyed drawing and music. He designed and built many ingenious equipment improvements. Dave loved the outdoors. He grew up hunting deer in Utah with his father and Uncles and was a lifetime member of the NRA. He enjoyed off-road motorcycle trail-riding in the mountain west. He was a lifetime member of the Salt Lake Motorcycle Club and spent years in charge of the mountain loop for the Cherry Creek 100 mile desert race the club sponsored, near Little Sahara Sand Dunes State Park. While involved in this event in 1967, he found and saved the life of a child who had wandered miles away from camp getting lost in the dunes. He also represented off-road enthusiasts on a BLM land-use committee for many years. When he wasn’t riding his motorcycle, he and Dawn played competitive racquetball. When they were both retired, they sailed their sailboat from Florida to Maryland and also around Puget Sound in Washington State.

David is preceded in death by Dawn, their son Douglas, his parents Ray and Lucy and stepmother, Bernice Spencer. David was one of the last few remaining great-grandchildren of Brigham Young.

Funeral Services will be held on October 14, 2023. The viewing will be at 10:00 AM and the funeral service will be at 11:00 AM. Services will be held at the Church Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints chapel located at 1272 East Walden Lane, Draper, UT. David wished to be cremated.
