Devasubramaniam Gunaseelan Coopamah, lovingly known to all as Deva, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, July 31st, 2025. He was born on December 21st, 1982 (42 years old) in Quatre-Bornes, Mauritius, to Dr. Goonooseven Coopamah (deceased) and Dr. Uma Coopamah. He was the third of five siblings- Malini, Padmini, Akilesh, and Ryan.
After his graduation from Royal College Curepipe, Deva came to the United States in 2001 to attend the University of Arizona, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. After completing a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degrees, he worked for various companies in mining engineering consulting in Arizona and Utah.
In 2009, Deva married Lena Venkatasami, and together they welcomed two lovely daughters, Elsa and Asta, who are now 12 (almost 13) and 6 years old. These girls were Deva’s greatest pride and joy.
The other two things that Deva loved most were his native Mauritius and football (soccer). Although he lived in the United States for 25 years and made his life here, he never ceased to long for Mauritius- the food, the beaches, his friends. Deva was obsessed with football, a sport that he played from his youngest years until adulthood, when a knee injury forced him to stop. He inherited our dad’s passion for Manchester United, watching as many English Premier League matches as he could catch. In fact, he would watch as much football as he could find on TV. He also loved exploring the cuisines of the world, a gastronome who was always eager to try new restaurants or dishes.
Deva was intelligent and quick-witted and had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Anyone who spent any amount of time around him would also agree that he was a sharp dresser and enjoyed the finer things in life. He never spared an expense to ensure a more elevated experience, whether for himself or for loved ones. He put a lot of thought and care into the gifts he bought for others to make sure they were things they needed or would enjoy. He loved to read and always had a book around. He always made time for friends near and far.
Deva’s sudden passing leaves a profound void in the lives of his family and all who loved him. His legacy is one of boundless generosity, kindness, and quiet strength.
