Don C Hales, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great and great-great-grandfather, brother, friend, and faithful disciple of Jesus Christ, passed away unexpectedly on October 16, 2026, in St. George Utah, at the age of 86. Active, and full of life, Don lived each day with gratitude, purpose, and a deep love for the people around him.
Don was born in Pleasant Grove, Utah on August 14, 1940, to Clifford and Dora Hales. Don was raised in a loving home alongside four brothers and one sister. He was involved in many things growing up including raising a cow for the State Fair to playing all sports in high school, earning him the title of “Golden Toe” in football.
Don’s greatest joy was his family. He and his beloved wife, Patricia, were married on September 4, 1958, and were blessed with eight children, four boys and four girls, with two foster sons added along the way. They raised their family in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, creating a home full of faith, love, hard work, laughter, and devotion to one another. After Patricia’s passing in 2010, Don was blessed to marry Eve Bertran, enjoying nine wonderful years together, and following Eve’s passing, he later married Ramona Stirling, who enriched his life, enhanced his love of the arts and introduced him to his new passion of painting. Through seasons of joy and sorrow, Don remained steady, optimistic, and deeply committed to loving and serving his family.
Don was a remarkably active man who enjoyed life and made the most of it. Throughout his life, he worked hard and pursued many interests. As a young father he began his career as a salesman at Bakers Shoes in Sugarhouse and opened another Bakers Shoes as the manager in the Cottonwood Mall. Later he pursued a career in real estate, property development and home-building, finishing his career in the physical facilities department at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, managing developments of Church properties in the Philippines and other parts of Asia.
Don loved traveling, playing sports, painting and spending time outdoors. Whether playing tennis, cheering on his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, or simply enjoying the world around him, Don brought energy, warmth, and always showed genuine interest in others. He was a great cheerleader for the people he loved and had a way of lifting them, helping them to feel seen, valued, and better for having spent time with him.
A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Don lived his faith quietly and consistently through service. He loved the Lord and served in many callings throughout his life, blessing countless individuals and families. He particularly loved serving as a Stake President in the Butler West Stake. His church service was never about position or recognition; it was about people. Don led with love, served willingly, and reflected the Savior’s love in the way he listened, encouraged, and cared.
Don especially cherished his children, grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren. His posterity was a source of constant pride and happiness, and he delighted in their accomplishments, their growth, and the simple blessing of being together. Don’s influence will continue through the many lives he shaped by his example.
Don was preceded in death by his first wife Patricia Jolley Hales and his second wife Eve Bertran; his sons, Greg and Richard Hales; his brothers Harley and Steven Hales, his sister Judy Tingey and his parents, Clifford and Dora Hales. He is survived by his wife, Ramona Stirling Hales; his children Shelli (Kip) Densley, KaRynn (Bryan) Christensen, Terri Busch Hales, Michael Hales, Lisa (Mike) Walters, Paul (Jennie) Hales, and Camille (Craig) Bergstrom; his foster son, Darren (Brenda) Tafoya; his brothers Mark and Jay Hales; his grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild; and many extended family members and friends, all who loved him dearly.
Don’s life was a gift to all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, devotion, kindness and joy. His family will remember his strength, his humor, his love of activity, the arts, travel, sports, and the outdoors, his unwavering testimony, and the countless ways he made life better for those around him. He was a loyal friend, a loving leader, whose steady kindness made others feel deeply cared for. Don always expressed he was in the people business; He loved people and people loved him.
