Doris Novella Phillips Bell

April 29, 1914 — August 9, 2014

Doris Bell, 100, passed away peacefully of natural causes at home. Born in Gainesboro, Tennessee to John Monroe Phillips and Pearl Vada Shephard. She married Orden Heber Bell on March 17, 1934 in Taft, California. Sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on January 8, 1935. Later married Ernie Meacham on January 11, 1981.

Doris grew up in Taft, California as the oldest of 6 children and was considered a second mom whenever her mom was out. She was the 7th grade tennis champion and graduated from Taft High School with top marks in Home Economics. Doris loved to travel. She would always say, "If the car goes I go too." Doris also loved to sing, dance, fish, bowl, cook and keep a clean house.

Doris was a feisty, fun loving "29 year old" her whole adult life. Doris loved to step out in the most fashionable outfits wherever she went.

Doris worked as a cashier at Sudbury & Maxwell's grocery store. Some well-known people would drive across town just to be waited on by her.

Doris is survived by her two children: Valeen Y. B. Carter, Lawrence L. Bell and brother, Wendell Phillips. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 17 great great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 15, at 10:00 am at the Murray 1st Ward, 363 East Vine Street. Friends and family can visit Thursday evening 6:00-8:00 pm at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church Friday morning 8:30-9:30 am prior to the service.
