Doris Ann Sundstrom Young, age 90, peacefully returned to her heavenly home on January 21, 2026. She passed away surrounded by care and kindness at Legacy House Assisted Living in South Jordan, Utah.
Doris was born on December 15, 1935, in Park City, Utah, to Albert Alexander Sundstrom and Mable Larsen. She was the second of four children and was raised in a home filled with love and strong family bonds that she carried with her throughout her life.
She graduated from Park City High School, where she was honored to serve as one of the graduation speakers. After high school, she married and moved to Salt Lake City. Doris worked for the telephone company, Pykettes Clothing, and later retired from the Salt Lake School District’s Accounting Department. She had a natural gift with numbers and took quite pride in her work.
On June 8, 1956, Doris married the love of her life, Reese Merlyn Young, in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised three children: Blake, Barry, and Lou Ann. Doris devoted her life to her family and her faith, serving faithfully in many church callings. During her time as Relief Society President, it was common for family members to ask if they could eat the food in the refrigerator—knowing it might already be earmarked for someone in need. Serving others was simply who she was.
Doris was a quiet, gentle, loving giant who never sought attention. Her compassion had no limits, her work ethic was unwavering, and her smile was truly infectious. She had a soft giggle that brought warmth and comfort to those around her and made even ordinary moments feel special.
She was exceptionally talented in the domestic arts—cooking and baking, sewing, crocheting and knitting, tole painting, and keeping a beautiful, welcoming home. One of her greatest gifts was her ability to make her house feel like a true home, filled with peace, warmth, and love.
Doris also had a fun and surprising passion for sports, especially for the Utah Jazz. She knew the players by name and number and wasn’t shy about offering her opinion on who should stay—or be traded.
Doris is survived by her loving children: Blake Young (Tammy), Barry Young, and Lou Ann Burnett (Scott); seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and her sister, Patricia Welch (Robert).
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Reese; her parents; her siblings Carol and Albert; and her precious great-grandson, Nixon.
Our family expresses heartfelt gratitude and deep appreciation to the compassionate caregivers at Legacy House Assisted Living and Inspiration HomeCare & Hospice. Your love, support, and tender care for our mom meant more to us than words can express. We truly could not have done this without you.
