Dorothy Bowen Bennett died peacefully surrounded by her family on December 28, 2025, in South Salt Lake, Utah at age 92. She was born on December 25, 1933, in Twin Falls, Idaho. She married Loyal R. Bennett on December 15, 1952, in the Logan, Utah Temple.
Dorothy was raised under trying family circumstances and quickly learned how to work hard, be assertive, make friends, and adapt to new surroundings, pulling family and adopted family close to her. She was always ready with a keen observation, a good story, a warm hug, and engaging laughter.
She was a strong, independent woman who set high standards for herself and others. This was reflected in the way she presented herself, supported her family, lived her religion, and chose and supported Loyal as her husband. Dorothy was an adventurer who loved to learn. She traveled domestically and internationally as a tour guide, with Loyal often accompanying her. Dorothy loved serving others in meaningful and personal ways. She perfected her art of cake baking and decorating, often being the go-to person to create exceptionally beautiful wedding cakes for her family and others. Her hobbies included taking motorcycle trips with Loyal, fishing, ice fishing, and camping, as well as doing many of these hobbies with their grandchildren and supporting their grandchildren in their many activities.
Dorothy was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She lived a life of service devoted to her community and the Lord Jesus Christ and His restored gospel. She served faithfully in the community as a member of Lions Club International, as well as Daughters of Utah Pioneers. As a Church leader, she inspired many and especially cherished the time she and Loyal spent on a mission together in the Palestine, Texas area and serving as ordinance workers together in the Salt Lake City temple. Her reunion with Loyal and her birth mother (who passed away when Dorothy was only six months old) is surely sweet and joyful.
Dorothy is survived by three of her four children, Susan Losee (Leonard), Kevin Bennett (Debbie), and Rodney Bennett (Judy); sister Afton Thomas; 16 of her 17 grandchildren, her 27 great grandchildren; and 1 great great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Loyal, mother Elva Lucy Everton, father Asel Carlos Bowen, three stepmothers Euelda Misner, Viola Bybee, and Ada Jensen; sisters Gwen Thompson, Barbara Lewis, Elva Jean Bowen, LuDene Carter, and Donna Whetman; son Mitchell Bennett; and grandson Ricky Burge.
The family wants to thank the Canyon Home and Hospice nurses and staff for taking care of Dorothy in such a compassionate way.
