Dorothy Petterson Hale, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away on June 7, 2026, at the age of 99.
Dorothy was born on May 4, 1927, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Emil A. Petterson and Jane D. Berryman. She was raised with her siblings Frank Petterson, Shirley Bone, George Petterson, and Joan Fielding.
Dorothy married her high school sweetheart, Edward H. Hale Jr., in the Salt Lake Temple on August 21, 1950. They shared more than 56 years of marriage before Edward passed away in 2007.
A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dorothy was baptized by Edward on May 1, 1948 before Edward left for his mission. She loved the friends she made in the Olympus Stake and remained close to many of them throughout her life. Even after moving from the Olympus area in 1991, she continued attending church there for many years because of the friendships she treasured.
Dorothy worked hard throughout her life and retired from the University of Utah after many years of service. She was independent, dependable, and deeply devoted to her family.
She lovingly cared for her mother in her later years and was a devoted caregiver to her husband, Edward, during his long health challenges. Taking care of others came naturally to her, and she was always concerned about the well-being of those she loved.
Family was the center of Dorothy's life. She loved gathering for Sunday dinners and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren have fond memories of sleepovers at Grandma's house, family vacations to St. George, and trips to McDonald's for ice cream cones. There always seemed to be treats waiting at Grandma's house, and she took great joy in spoiling her grandchildren.
Dorothy enjoyed bowling and continued to bowl well into her nineties. She loved the companionship of her dogs, Tucker and later Minnie, and faithfully walked them every day.
She is survived by her children, Stephen Hale; Sharon (Mark) Timpson; and Scott (Kelly Crane) Hale.
Also surviving are Sharon and Mark's children: Matthew Timpson; Julie (Aaron) Peterson and children Jayden, Jordan, and Hunter; and Jake (Alexis) Timpson and children Liam, Lincoln, Lenny, Reese, and Robyn.
Also surviving are Scott and Kelly Crane Hale's children: Nathan (Katie) Hale and children Micah, Beau, Eli, Simon, and Abigail; Anthony Hale; Andrea (Spencer) Leatham and children Boston, Lorelai, and Ezekiel (Zek); Sarajane (Tyler) Ellis and children Brooks and Benson; Chantele (Mike) Lunt and children Capri, Collins, and Dash; and Justin (Braelynn) Crane and children Duke, Barron, and Rocky.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward H. Hale Jr.; her parents, Emil A. Petterson and Jane D. Berryman; her siblings; and many other cherished family members.
The family is grateful for the care and kindness shown to Dorothy by several dedicated caregivers during her final months.
Dorothy will be remembered for her faith, her love of family and friends, her willingness to care for others, and the quiet example she set throughout her life. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
