Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Earle Ray Fail, passed away on January 23, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was born on June 18, 1946, in Provo, Utah, to Ray Ellis Fail and Dora Merie Dockstader, the first of ten children. He married Betty Rae Powell on July 19, 1969, and their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake City Temple on January 18, 1974. He was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings throughout his life.
Earle loved his country and was proud of his service in the Navy as a Seabee (CB, CM). He enlisted when his draft number came up, giving him the choice of which military branch to join. He served for three years, spending the last year and a half in Vietnam. He attained the rank of Petty Officer Second Class and received several medals and commendations before an honorable discharge.
Earle retired after 43 years as a crane operator and shop manager for Wagstaff Crane Company. You couldn’t drive with him anywhere in Utah—or in several surrounding states—without him pointing out buildings and projects he had worked on. During that time, he also earned an associate’s degree in Industrial Maintenance Mechanics. He loved trains and had several model train sets. He rebuilt multiple car engines, some before he even graduated from Payson High School. His room was decorated with model cars and trucks he built himself.
Earle and Betty danced for many years with the Rocketeers Square Dance Club, where they served as club officers. He loved all things Western, including John Wayne movies, cowboy poetry, and country music; but he also loved music in general and enjoyed playing it from his reel-to-reel, vinyl records, tapes, and CDs. He also enjoyed camping with his family and relaxing in the great outdoors.
He won the battles with two heart attacks and a triple-bypass surgery, multiple back surgeries, and bladder cancer. Unfortunately, his body was too tired to keep fighting, and he finally surrendered into his Heavenly Parents’ arms. The family would like to express special thanks to his hospice nurse, Hilda, for helping us keep him comfortable.
Earle is survived by his wife, Betty; sons Scott (Sara) Fail, David (Holly) Fail, and Bryan (Jana) Fail; daughter Becky (Kitt) Davis; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers Richard and Tony Fail; and sisters Molly Ford, Elena Wilson, Kathy Ford, Teresa Schaller, and Cindy Ortolani. He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brothers, James and Kim.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at 11:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 2030 West Chateau Avenue Taylorsville, UT 84129, with a viewing taking place at 9:30 AM. An evening viewing will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the same location. Interment will follow at Memorial Redwood Mortuary and Cemetery.
