Mickey died on April 12, 2012 after a long battle with congestive heart failure. She was born in Nampa, Idaho to Lemuel Craig McCain and Effie Mary Ramsey McCain on July 9, 1920. Mickey earned a teaching degree from Lewiston Normal School and taught one year. She married Louis Dubois Ranney on January 22, 1944 in Nampa, Idaho. As was customary in her time, she quit teaching to dedicate herself to her role of wife and mother. They moved from Arizona to Oregon and then to Great Falls, Montana with their two oldest children. She was President of the PTA for Franklin Elementary School and the Youth Director at the Great Falls First Methodist Church. In 1953 they moved to Utah. Although she adored her husband and children, she felt called to teach. After her children were in school, she went back to college. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Utah. She taught elementary school in Granite District for 15 years. Mickey and Louis were both private pilots. They square danced with the "Salt Shakers" Square Dancing Club, bowled in various leagues and played Duplicate and Party Bridge. She was an avid bridge player and came within 3.84 gold points of her "Life Master" in duplicate bridge. She held 698.43 points at the time of her death. When they retired, they traveled extensively in their motor home, covering all of the lower 48 states. She traveled to Hawaii and Alaska and was proud of the fact that she had traveled to all 50 states. Mickey was a member of and often held offices in many women's groups; Weather Wives, The American Association of University Women, Ruth's Circle, an organization of women pilots called the "99er's", Church Women United, and the Women's Legislative Council. She and Louis were members of the Baggy Wrinkles Mariners at Wasatch Presbyterian Church. She was a role model and an inspiration to her family up to the very end. She volunteered at the battered women's shelter in Salt Lake where she coordinated school work for the children who were living there. Sometimes she tutored. Sometimes she picked up work from their teachers. She provided sacks of food for the families when they moved out of the shelter. Mickey had a deep and abiding faith in God and her Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church for 46 years. Her faith and her family were the most important things in her life, sustaining her through hard times and physical pain. She loved life. She will be sorely missed by her family, her fellow church members, bridge players, pilots, and friends. Mickey is survived by 4 children; Leora Hewitt (Paul), Gerri Ball (Lance), Dustie Preston, formerly named Linda Ranney Rigby (Sheila), Roger Ranney (Tina); 9 grandchildren; Brian Hewitt (Lisa), Darrell Hewitt (Kari), Matt Rigby (Chandra), Lance Ball (Tiffany), Leslie Derksen (Nick), Veronica Ball (Saun), Asher Ranney, Kelila Ranney, Devin Preston; and 3 great grandchildren; Isabel Hewitt, Spencer Ball, Maia Rigby.
