Edward Kent Hutchings

Edward Kent Hutchings, age 87, passed away on July 13, 2025 in Draper, Utah. He was born on November 28, 1937 in Springville, Utah to Charles Edward Hutchings and Helen May (Quinney) Hutchings. Kent was the oldest of three children and was very close with his siblings, JoAnn (Bill) VanOs and Chet (Judy) Hutchings. Their family moved several times for Ed’s work and consequently lived in Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and then settled in Utah. Kent enjoyed his junior and high school years in Townsend and Deer Lodge, Montana with many friends and success in sports and academics.

After high school, he attended Brigham Young University, and then accepted the call to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in South Africa and Rodesia. After his mission, and receiving a B.S. Degree from BYU in 1962, he accepted the duty and privilege of serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. There he served 2 years active duty and 4 years reserve with an honorable discharge in 1968.

Kent met and married his sweetheart, Judith Maurine (Poll) Hutchings on June 18, 1965. They were blessed with two daughters, J. Michele Burraston (Todd), and Teresa M. Farley (Dave). Later they were blessed with 6 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

In 1968 Kent earned a Masters of Educational Administration Degree from BYU and worked for Granite School District for 36 years. He started teaching history at Olympus Junior High in 1964 and then moved into administration where he was an assistant principal at Kearns, Olympus, Skyline, and Cottonwood High Schools. He loved teaching and interacting with the kids in school and at extra-curricular activities. As administrator, he helped create a new scheduling program for Granite District.

Kent loved sports and was an avid BYU fan. He hated missing a ballgame! For years he attended all the home BYU Football games that he could, and was a member of the Cougar Club. He also loved traveling and sightseeing, and would plan 3 week long road trips in the summer, whenever possible, so he could share all that he knew about the history of our country and church with his family.

Kent served for several years on the High Council, in the Bishopric and as Bishop of a YSA ward. Kent and Judy served a Salt Lake inner-city mission and then a Temple Mission in Nauvoo, Illinois. When they were home, they found great joy serving as temple workers in the Salt Lake, Jordan River, and Draper Temples.

Kent is survived by his children, Michele Burraston and Teresa (Dave) Farley, his siblings, Chet (Judy) Hutchings and JoAnn VanOs, and his grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Helen, his wife, Judy, his son-in-law, Todd Burraston and his brother-in-law, Bill VanOs.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the nursing staff at Beacon Crest Senior Living and Inspiration Hospice for their constant and caring care over the last 2 years.

Funeral services will be held at the Draper 1st ward building on 12300 S. 600 E., Draper, UT on Friday, July 18th at 11:00 am. A viewing will be held Thursday, July 17th from 6-8 pm and prior to the funeral services on Friday starting at 10 am.

Interment will follow at Mountain View Memorial Cemetery, 3115 Bengall Blvd., Cottonwood Heights, UT
