Margaret Elaine West Sandberg, 88, our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother passed away December 20, 2012 from cause's incident to age. After years of suffering, her gentle soul is finally at rest. Mother's life motto was "Make the best of the situation". She set that example until the end.
Elaine was born August 21, 1924, in SLC, Utah, to Marguerite Watson and Nephi Walter West. She grew up on Jefferson Ave. with her younger brother Bob. As a girl she spent time with her mother's sisters, Erma, Tess and Cousins Maxine and Thelma. The six of them were very close. Her mother unexpectedly died the day of Elaine's high school graduation.
While attending the University of Utah, Elaine waited patiently for her sweetheart to return home from service in World War II and a mission. On April 19th 1949, as the most beautiful bride, she married her beloved Don. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple. 25 years later Don passed on. We believe she is now re-united with him and other loved ones.
The highlight of her life was being a wife and mother to her family. In 1963 Elaine, Don and family were called to serve an LDS Building Mission to Kuopio, Finland. She bravely supported her husband and family while learning a new language in a foreign country.
Elaine's handwriting was elegant; many family members benefited from personal handwritten letters. She was a capable baker, her specialty was pumpkin pie. Together with Dad they were always remodeling their home on Lambourne Avenue. We also have memories of Mother playing the piano and of her lovely singing voice.
Elaine was a faithful member of her Church. She donated many hours of service to the primary and young adults. Her favorite calling was teaching children. She loved volunteering as a PTA president at Sherman Elementary when her children were there. Her grandchildren have memories of Halloween parties, re-unions and Christmas get-togethers. Her home was always open. Many of her grandchildren chose to live with her while going to college.
Elaine is survived by her four children, Brent (Staci) SLC, Mark (Claudia) Las Vegas, Wendy Davis (Tom) SLC, and Paul (Reatha) SLC; 19 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren, Preceded in death by her husband Donald L. Sandberg.
