Our beloved father and grandfather, Martin, age 86, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday April 1, 2026, after an extended battle with Parkinson’s disease. Ernest Martin Chamberlain Jr. was born in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, March 20, 1940. He was the oldest of five children of Ernest Martin Chamberlain Sr. and Agnes Fay Barney.
After graduating from Olympus High School in 1958, Martin served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 8 years. Here he learned the importance of obedience and went on to magnify his duty to God, family, and country for the rest of his life. Shortly after serving a 30-month LDS mission in France and Belgium, Martin met his sweetheart and eternal companion, Genene Ann Fowler. They were married in the Manti Temple on April 12, 1963, and partnered together in faith and sacrifice to raise a son and five daughters. Martin loved learning, both secular and religious. He obtained a Ph. D in biochemistry from the University of Utah in June 1973. He approached his learning of the gospel with even greater fervor. Through this process, along with a lifetime of enduring well in difficult challenges, he developed both knowledge and wisdom that he used to bless countless others. He taught his family to love learning, and more importantly, to love the Lord. He held many positions of responsibility, including two that he particularly treasured: vice president at Ballard Medical Products and bishop of the Cottonwood 14th ward. Even when not in a position of formal authority, Martin continued to patiently minister to individuals in need. He was a great example of enduring to the end as he would even minister to many who were intending to serve him during his final ailing years in a care center. He will long be remembered as one who made others feel heard and loved whenever they were in his presence.
He is survived by his 6 children: Debra (Bruce), Vicky (Nasib), Martin III (Heather), Sandra (Craig), Sheri (James), and Lisa (Shane). He leaves a legacy of faith and integrity for his 36 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He also leaves behind 4 siblings: Dennis (Jerri) Chamberlain, Deanna (Chuck) Grant, Lyle Brent (Jan) Chamberlain, and Mary (Chris) Horne. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, 3 granddaughters, and a great grandson.
A viewing will be held on Monday, April 6, 2026, at 9:00 am at the Barnes Park Ward chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 1275 W (Flint St) 200 N, Kaysville, UT 84037. Funeral services will follow in the same location at 11:00 am. Interment will be at the Memorial Holladay (4900 South Memory Lane, Holladay, UT 84117). The interment will be at 3:00 pm.
