Esequiel R. Ortiz, also known as "Zeke," passed away on July 5, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, hard work, and dedication to his family and community. Born on September 7, 1934, he lived a life defined by honor, humility, and generosity.
Zeke honorably served in the United States Marine Corps from January 16, 1953, to January 15, 1956, and was discharged with the rank of Sergeant. Following his military service, he dedicated 33 years to the Union Pacific Railroad, beginning as a Sectionman and advancing through the ranks to Foreman, General Foreman, Roadmaster, and ultimately Classroom Instructor for the UPRR's Maintenance of Way.
A devoted parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Zeke faithfully served his parish in many ways. He was an altar server and helped with church bingo nights and carnivals. After retiring, he worked for Western Foods delivering to the Ballpark and the golf courses. He continued serving his community as a crossing guard for Salt Lake City Public Services.
Zeke is survived by his son, Joseph M. Ortiz; his brothers, Marion (Diane) Ortiz and Alex (Esther) Ortiz; his sisters, Virginia Gonzalez and Diane (Cesar) Garcia; his brothers-in-law, Aldolph (Ann) Amador, Sacramento (Beverly) Amador, and Tony (Evelia) Amador; his sisters-in-law, Kay Amador-Dorsett, Louisa Valdez, Consuelo (Jose Andres) Moreno, and Marcela (Martin) Gomez; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Grace Amador Ortiz; his son, Paul Ortiz; his brothers, Lawrence Ortiz and Manuel Ortiz; his nephew, Brandon Brandlett; and his brothers-in-law, Tino (Jean) Amador, Pedro (Coby) Amador, and Victor Valdez.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 715 West 300 North, Salt Lake City, Utah. A viewing will be held Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Memorial Murray Mortuary, 5850 South 900 East, Murray, Utah 84121.
Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 275 U Street, Salt Lake City, Utah.
