Evelyn Mecham Howard

October 27, 1940 — January 27, 2023

Evelyn Mecham Howard left this earthly journey on Friday, January 27, 2023 in the ICU at the Murray Intermountain Medical Center.  She had been on a retirement cruise to the Mediterranean when she caught pneumonia and was hospitalized in Athens, Greece.  Her condition worsened, and she was intubated and sedated. After 3 weeks of hard work and red tape, her family was able to get her flown home on a private Lear jet air ambulance with a doctor, nurse and 2 pilots accompanying her.  Unfortunately, her condition worsened here in Utah. Her family is so sad her wonderful life ended so abruptly.
Evelyn was born on October 27, 1940 in Lewiston, Utah to Iral Fay and Anna Rogers Mecham.  Evelyn was the oldest of 8 children.  She grew up in the Salt Lake area and South Jordan, graduating from Jordan High School in 1958.  She was called to serve an LDS mission in the
French East Mission from 1961-63.  She graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelors degree in Education and subsequently earned a Masters degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Utah.  She loved to learn. She loved to teach and had a vast knowledge of ancient religious history.  She worked for Davis School District, teaching Special Education for many years.  Upon retirement, Evelyn enjoyed serving as a missionary for 12 years in the Joseph Smith Building in Salt Lake City, where she developed many dear friendships.
Evelyn was in the Utah Daughters of Pioneers for 50 years, just earning her pin. She loved to travel and has been to more than 100 countries.  She often traveled alone (with tours) and had two more cruises planned at the time of her passing.
Evelyn is survived by her daughters Tiffany Jacobs, Colleen Gillespie, and Valoree Howard Hartog.
Evelyn is also survived by her siblings Dee Ray Mecham (Ruby), Rex I. Mecham (Ilene), and her sister Peggy Mecham Frost (Lemar); sister-in-law MaryAnn B. Mecham, and brother-in-law Mark Boberg.  She is preceded in death by her parents and 4 siblings,  Roger Leo Mecham (MaryAnn), Betty Staley (James), Lois Mecham Jacobs (Robert H.), Jeneal Mecham Boberg (Mark).
The family wishes especially to thank Rex & Ilene Mecham, Carefree Travel Assist, Red Star Aviation, IMC Hospital, Inspiration Home Health & Hospice, Brenna Mawa, Bishop Semrow (and Miller Springs Ward), and the Joel and Marie (& Alison) Shepherd family, Memorial Mortuaries and Cemetery. Thank you to all for your loving care and efforts, both in life and beyond!
