Floyd E. Dietlein, 87, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away peacefully with his family at his side on February 10, 2015. He was born in Los Angeles, California on January 9, 1928 to Florence Simonet and Ignacious John Dietlein. As a boy, Floyd studied the Bible with Mrs. Agnes Eggleston, from age 5 through his college years. As a teenager, Floyd worked at Roger's Verdugo Drug in Montrose, California. The Rogers were very important in shaping Floyd's life and they remained dear friends. Floyd was a professional magician and Houdini was a life long interest. He earned an Associate Degree in Business from Glendale College and was a licensed pharmacist in Las Vegas, Nevada. Floyd married Jocelyn Miller, the love of his life, on Sept. 9, 1948. Floyd and Jackie moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where they raised their family. Floyd proudly worked for McKesson & Robbins for 45 years as a wholesale drug salesman. He appreciated the glitzy life and entertainment in Las Vegas when it was a town of 25,000. Floyd enjoyed Laguna Beach, Balboa Island and swimming in the ocean. He loved traveling to Germany and Hawaii and socializing with his California friends in Erste Grupe. He had a passion for anything German including brats, beer and stomping his feet to polka music.
In 1994, Floyd and Jackie moved to Salt Lake City to be near family. He continued to enjoy traveling and attending plays at the Hale Centre Theatre in Salt Lake City. He recently was able to visit the Magic Castle in California due to the kindness of Dr. Sossenheimer. He always made people laugh with his stories and jokes and he will be remembered and greatly missed.
Floyd is survived by his wife, Jackie; son, John R. Dietlein (Tami); daughter, Diane Van Os (Roy); grandchildren, Whitney Lynn Dietlein, Matthew John Dietlein, Emily K. (Van Os) Panhorst (Trevor), Eric M. Van Os; and brother, Allan Dietlein (Sandra). Preceded in death by brother, Robert Dietlein.
A memorial service will be held at the Risen Life Church, 2780 East 3900 South, on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. The family appreciates the excellent care Floyd received at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Huntsman so others may also benefit from their care.
