Fritz B. Helland

April 10, 1932 — October 24, 2012

Frithjof Bjarne Helland passed away in his beloved mountains on the evening of the 24th of October. He was with his companion dog "Odin". He was born in Bergen, Norway on April 10th, 1932. He married Gerda Finnesand on October 16th, 1953.

They joined the LDS church and decided to move to The United States in May of 1959. They brought 3 children with them and completed their family with a fourth child born here in Utah. They were sealed in the Salt lake Temple in June of 1960.They lived in Utah until 1964 and then moved to Seattle for 5 years. They moved back to Utah in 1969 and have lived in their East Millcreek home for the past 43 years. His wife Gerda passed away on March 25th, 2008. He missed her greatly and is enjoying his reunion with her beyond the veil.

Fritz enjoyed fishing, hiking and reading. He was very generous with his family and lived frugally so they could have what they needed. He loved to tease his loved ones and spend time with them. He was in the Norwegian Navy in his young adult years in Norway. He learned many skills in the U.S. and he used them to provide for his family.

He had a strong testimony of the gospel which guided his actions throughout his life. He was a faithful home teacher and served as a High Priest Group Leader as well as other callings. He served a mission to Norway with his sweetheart in 1992.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob Kruger Helland and Martha Kristine Skorpen.

He is survived by his 4 sisters, Ingeborg Harvell, Berit Oen, Drude Olsen, Martha Micklesen. He is survived by his four children, Gunn Challis (Brian), Mai McAllister (Doug), Jacob (Janet), Frank (Sandy), 21 grandchildren, 19 and 1/2 great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the unified police force, Sheriff Winder and Detective Faulkner for their many hours in helping to search for Fritz. We also want to thank the many volunteers who also helped search.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the East Millcreek 16th Ward, 3408 Celeste Way (3120 E.) Friends may call Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the to the service.
