Gary F. Harmon

A celebration of life will be Saturday for Gary F. Harmon, supplier of electricity to millions, Life Scout,  Air Force operational intelligence technician, geologist, husband of 60 years, father of three, Utah Stars and Jazz fan, master of the bump and run and a trout's worst nightmare.

Mr. Harmon died Oct. 6 in Boise, Idaho, after a long illness with diabetes. He was 84.

Mr. Harmon was born in Salt Lake City to Franklin and Marian Harmon and graduated from Granite High School. He joined the U.S. Air Force and was assigned to a base in Nebraska, then ordered to Japan during the Korean War, where he reported to an intelligence unit in Tokyo despite having attended no intelligence training schools, but having read the Air Force manuals.

After returning home, he graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor of science in geology after which he worked around the West exploring for coal, uranium and other fuels.

Mr. Harmon also was involved with claims on some of the richest gold claims in North America near Elko, Nev.

Mr. Harmon's career took him to the Tennessee Valley Authority, where he retired as manager of fossil fuels.

He married Eda G. Ackerman in 1955 and the couple had three children, Gary P.; Maren Boyce and Kristen Tracy. He also is survived by a sister, Joyce Andrews.

Mr. Harmon was an enthusiastic golfer who carded four holes in one while relying on an uncanny short game. He was a sharp-eyed fly fisherman and regular viewer of Jazz games who knew a push-off when he saw it.
