George Smith

February 12, 1933 — August 6, 2013

SALT LAKE CITY- George Ronald Smith 80 passed thru heavens veil in the evening of Tuesday 6 August 2013. We believe he was welcomed there by his loving parents George Henry Smith and Claire Hoffman Higham, and younger sister Shirley, along with many other family members and friends.
George began his earthly debut on 12 February 1933 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the oldest of three siblings. His childhood was spent partly in Salt Lake City and also in Tooele on his paternal grand-parents farm. He also enjoyed spending summers in Blackfoot, Idaho on his uncle’s farm where he had so many cousins and so many fun things to do.
He attended East High School, Utah Trade Tech, the University of Utah and Weber State College. He enjoyed helping others and worked at the VA Hospital and as a paramedic at Tooele Army Depot.
He proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Navy, and that turn of events is what brought his path into the path of his beloved sweet heart Jeanie N. Mahelona. He met her in Honolulu, Hawaii and it was truly love at first sight. After only two weeks of dating her, he proposed. Three months later on 5 July 1952 they married in the Waikiki LDS Tabernacle.
This union brought four daughters into their home. On 6 September 1967 they solemnized their marriage and sealed their family together in the Salt Lake City Temple for time and all eternity. He showed how important his family was to him by always supporting them in all they did. Our parents traveled many miles and never missed our ball games, or whatever we were involved in. Later they became involved in the lives of their five grandchildren and now one great-grandchild.
His own hobbies varied throughout the years, photography, fly-fishing, rock hounding, lapidary work, four wheeling, and skeet shooting to name a few.
Dad had a sweet spirit that really showed itself these past two years. Those who came in contact with him felt it. He was always gracious even as his health declined. George would want us to thank all those who cared for him and loved him. To the staff at Sunrise at Holladay Reminiscence and to Brighton Home Health and Hospice we thank you and love you with all our hearts.
George is survived by his loving wife, Jeanie, four daughters, Haunani Lopez, Lynnette Smith(Teri Ortega), Luana (Charles) Canfield, Shauna Smith(John Turner), brother , Carl (Bonnie) Smith, five grandchildren, Kimberly, Brion(Jenna), Ashley, Olivia, Nicolas (Josephine), one great-grandchild Kailani.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at 11am at the Holladay Cottonwood Mortuary 4670 So. Highland Drive, Holladay, Utah 84117. Friends and family may visit from 10 to 11am prior to services. Interment will be at Holladay Memorial Cemetery, 4900 South Memory Lane, Holladay Utah.
