Geraldine Mortensen Lewis, age 92, passed away on March 24, 2023. Gerry was born at home on August 4, 1930 in Emery, Utah to Clyde Ervin and Jenel Mortensen. As a child she lived on a farm and learned how to plant and harvest crops and tend to pigs,
chickens, sheep, horses, and cows. She spent much of her youth riding horses and camping in the mountains. She married Morris Lewis on November 10, 1951 and was later sealed to him in the Manti Utah temple on June 25, 1952. Together they moved to Killeen, Texas where Morris was stationed at Ft. Hood. They met many life long friends while in Texas and it was there where she learned how to make her famous Christmas Eve tacos. After their time in Texas, they moved back to Utah where they planted roots in Murray. They lived in the same house for over 60 years where they knew and loved all of their neighbors. They raised their three children, Sue, Richard, and Sherrie in this home and their children remember it as a house full of games, good food, and Pepsi on the patio. Once her children started school, she became a lunch lady and later a secretary at Hill View Elementary School. She worked there for over 20 years, where she quickly became a beloved fixture at the school. She knew each of the students by name and was loved and respected by the administration who joked that she ran the school. Gerry loved celebrating holidays with her family. Her family will miss all of her holiday traditions, especially her annual pumpkin carving contest where she awarded everyone a dollar and a candy bar. Her kids and grandkids also loved spending the night at her house before Thanksgiving breaking bread for stuffing, setting the table, and sharing drinks. Another favorite pastime was card games—a love she passed onto her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. We spent many Sunday nights playing Five Crowns or golf. She played in a couples Pinochle group for many years- often playing for hours, late into the night. She was also a diehard Jazz fan. She was a proud season ticket holder for many years, and rarely missed a game. Gerry also spent many years traveling to the family cabin up 9-mile canyon where she would teach the grandkids camp songs around the fire. Gerry was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints living for most of her life in Winder 3rd Ward where she served faithfully in several callings. Gerry accompanied Morris as he served in the bishopric at The Wentworth and together they ministered to many residents and often invited their grandchildren to serve alongside them.
Gerry is survived by her children Sue (Russ) Outsen, Richard (Amy) Lewis, and Sherrie Lewis; 9 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren who lovingly know her as “Grandma Candy”. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Beth and Belva, and her beloved husband Morris.
