Gilbert Hans Berhold (Gil) was born on April 17, 1934. He died at home May 19, 2026 in the presence of family. He was the beloved husband of Annette Robison Berhold whom he adored. Annette passed away in 2024. Gilbert is the son of Hans Heinrich Berhold and Almae Jonsson Berhold. He was the youngest of the family and had 3 older brothers- Edwin, Marvin and Merlin. Gilbert grew up in South Salt Lake and later moved to the East Millcreek area. Many of his summers as a youth were spent helping his Grandpa Jonsson on the farm in Highland, Utah, where he learned the value of hard work. He was a graduate of Granite High School, and the University of Utah where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He spent much of his professional career in the Aerospace industry. He served in the Army Reserve for eight years as a young adult.
Gilbert is survived by his brother Marvin and dear posterity, including 5 children and spouses: Mark (Stella), Matthew (Karla), Mindy (Richard) Matheson, Marcie (David) Lake, Misa (Jason) Anderson; 50 grandchildren, (including spouses), and 83 great-grandchildren, (as of this writing…), many of whom lovingly call him "Baba" and all of them love him dearly.
Gilbert lived to serve and minister to others - his church, his community, and most of all his loving wife and three generations of posterity. His family was his life and he loved them all. He enjoyed traveling with Granny (Annette) across the United States to visit them and to witness and support important family events. Much of his time during these visits was spent completing home repairs and remodeling projects to help out his children and show his love for them. He made many ingeniously designed home improvements, special gifts for home decor and holidays, and for the children to enjoy. His remodeling efforts, however, were most impactful on his posterity. He helped shape and influence them all to be more faithful, capable, competent, proficient and skilled for life's journeys.
Gilbert faithfully served in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, including Bishop in the East Millcreek 11th ward, temple worker in the Salt Lake Temple, and a missionary, along with his companion Annette, in the Utah, Salt Lake City Mission. In his younger years he worked with the Young Men to make fiberglass kayaks for all in the quorum, which was a monumental task. He also participated in designing and building many floats for neighborhood 4th of July parades and for 24th of July Stake float assignments for the Days of '47 Parades. He enjoyed building, woodworking and other projects for the family and others, including cabinetry for widows in the ward. He loved the temple and the doctrine of eternal families. This was a converting principle for him that guided his life, along with his deep love for the Savior.
Gilbert will be missed by countless many who regarded him as a wise influence in their lives. We will fondly remember his warm welcomes, insightful conversations, quiet strength, wisdom, faith, and teachings. He enjoyed time with the family- dinners together, reunions, and lively games of Liverpool Rummy. He made the best chocolate malts in the world. His deep and gentle voice will always sound in his family's ears, especially during times of decision making.
"Keep the faith" was his final piece of advice to his family. He encouraged them to go forward with more brightness of hope- following Jesus Christ's example of patience, long-suffering, kindness, and to "go about doing good."
