Gilmer Joseph Hendry, age 99, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2026, in his home in Santa Clara, Utah, surrounded by all of his children, just 53 days shy of his 100th birthday.

Gilmer was born on June 23, 1926, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to George W. Hendry and Helen Eliza Cox. He grew up in a close-knit family and graduated from South High School in 1943. On his 17th birthday, he enlisted in the United States Navy, much to the dismay of his mother, who already had three sons serving in the military. Gilmer honorably served his country during World War II, island hopping across the Pacific all the way to Japan, and later continued his service during the Korean War.

On March 26, 1946, Gilmer married the love of his life, Nelda Neilson. Their union was later solemnized for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple on June 16, 1997. Together they shared 61 devoted years of marriage, building a life centered on love, family, and faith.

Gilmer was a hardworking and dedicated man. He spent 33 years as a crane operator at Kennecott Copper Smelter, where he was known for his strong work ethic and reliability. For many of those years, he also worked a second job at Wasatch Shadows Nursery, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to providing for his family.

He was a loving father to his four children: Gilmer L. Hendry (Cathy), Craig E. Hendry (Linda), R. Gary Hendry (Lori), and Connie Hendry Magar (Larry). His legacy continues through his 13 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.

Gilmer was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Nelda; his three brothers and their spouses; and his granddaughter, Amanda Hendry Harper.

Gilmer will be remembered for his quiet strength, deep devotion to his family, and a life marked by service, sacrifice, and love. His presence will be deeply missed, but his example will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

A private burial will be held. A celebration of life for family and friends will take place on June 23, 2026, what would have been his 100th birthday. Details will be announced at a later date.
