Gordon Ronald Nelson

January 11, 1946 — June 5, 2026

Gordon Ronald Nelson, known to family and friends as Ron, passed away on June 5, 2026, in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of 80.

Born on January 11, 1946, in San Bernardino, California, to Gordon Nelson and Floy Whiteis Nelson, Ron lived an incredible life highlighted by determination, family, and friendship. He graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City and later served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Australia. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree from the University of Utah.

For more than 30 years, Ron worked as a clinical social worker for the State of Utah. He dedicated his career to helping others through difficult times and quietly made a difference in the lives of countless people.

Above all else, Ron loved his family. He was a proud father to Shane Nelson, Jennifer Stiffler, and Byron Nelson. Recently, one of his greatest joys was becoming a grandfather and spending time with his one-year-old granddaughter Cora, who brought him a world of everlasting smiles.

Ron is survived by his children, Shane, Jennifer (Larry), and Byron; his sisters, Teri Wilcox and Karen Eells; his granddaughter Cora; and many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon Nelson and Floy Nelson.

Those who knew Ron will remember his quirky sense of humor, dependability, and incomparable generosity. Ron was the type of man who would help those he loved without hesitation and without judgment. He made it a point to ensure everyone in his life was taken care of and supported. He possessed a personality that was very uniquely his own and an ability to leave a lasting presence on those who knew and loved him.

An avid golfer, Ron found immense joy on the golf course and could often be found perfecting his swing and enjoying the game. He shared this sport with his children and taught all three of them how to play. When he wasn't on the greens, he loved watching baseball (Go Dodgers!), concerts, and spending time with family and friends. Ron was also a familiar presence in his Rose Park neighborhood, where he grew up and spent the final years of his life.

Ron never sought attention or recognition. He enjoyed the simple things in life, meaningful relationships, and being there for the people he cared about. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, neighbors, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
