H. Byron Marchant died March 10, 2026, after a prolonged illness. He was born at home on Christmas Eve, 1941, the 13th of 15 children born to Stephen and Beatrice Marchant. Growing up in a large family, heart surgeries in childhood and early adulthood, and playing tennis in his Liberty Park neighborhood shaped his life. He was a proud graduate of South High School and Utah Technical College.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Gladys, and eleven siblings. He leaves behind three siblings, two children, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, his partner, and her daughter. Byron lived life on his own terms, guided by his personal convictions. He was known to show genuine care and affection for his grandchildren, who held a special place in his heart.
Byron spent the last 25 years of his life with his partner, Yvonne Bargues Rollins, PhD, in North Carolina, where he made his home. In his early years in North Carolina, when he was in good health, he and Yvonne enjoyed taking trips to explore the state’s natural beauty and Revolutionary War history sites. He loved listening to music, talking about politics, history, and philosophy with her, her daughter Sophie, and other friends. He also enjoyed watching sports. He loved children and was a kind neighbor.
His ashes will be placed in the Lake Hills Cemetery, Sandy, Utah, where many in his family are buried. There will be no services held. Those who would like to remember him could play a round of tennis (on a clay court if you want to win championships like the Europeans) or watch a match in his honor.
