Our dear wife, mother, and grandmother, Johanna (Hanny) Christina Janssen Van Leeuwen passed away peacefully on May 1, 2014 from kidney cancer.
She was born March 15, 1942 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands to Pietertje Adema Janssen. She was born in difficult times under difficult circumstances. These circumstances were softened by the love of her mother, grandmother and also her two aunts who loved her and treated her as their own.
She was an excellent student, learning German, French, and English in addition to her native Dutch. Hanny joined the LDS church at the age of twelve. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 21 where she met her sweetheart, Tony Van Leeuwen. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on September 17, 1964. They were blessed with five children who in turn have blessed them with 15 grandchildren.
Hanny was an avid reader and loved good literature, a legacy she passed on to her children and grandchildren.
She enjoyed serving her customers at Keyston Bros., where she worked for over 31 years.
Her greatest joy in life was her family. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She leaves us with a knowledge of the value and the importance of family as she kept in communication with all of her family and friends both near and far. She was thoughtful and kind and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Tony; children, Mark (Lisa), Christina (Mark) Ashton, Steve (Polli), Dave (Katie); fourteen grandchildren who will miss their sweet grandma; and her brother, Jan Arendt Janssen. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Van Leeuwen.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the East Mill Creek chapel located at 3750 S. Hillside Lane (2600 E.). A viewing will be held on Friday, May 9, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Holbrook Mortuary located at 3251 S. 2300 E. and at the church on the morning of the funeral from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Funeral services will be followed by her interment at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery.
