Hendrika Johanna Betournay

August 14, 1919 — February 24, 2008

Hendrika Johanna Betournay passed from this mortal existence February 24th 2008. She was born August 14th 1919 in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada to Arie Koole and Arendina Nyhoff. She immigrated into the United States in her senior year of high school, settling in Grangeville, Idaho. After graduating she attended a business college in Boise where she met the love of her life, Ed Betournay, on a blind date. They were married November 6th 1942 in Tucson Arizona while dad was serving in the Army Air Corps. After WW II ended mom and dad moved back to Boise to start their family. In 1959 the family moved to Billings Montana where dad had accepted a job with General Electric Co. Two years later they were transferred to Salt Lake City, Utah. After Dad retired they again moved back to their home town, Boise, Idaho where they were very happy living amongst their closest friends. Because of health issues mom and dad moved to Salt Lake City, Utah to be close to family in 2004. Dad passed away in May of that year. Mom lived at Saint Joseph's Villa in Salt Lake City until her passing. She always enjoyed living there; her favorite activity was Bingo for chocolate. Mom is survived by her three sons, Gerald Betournay (Barbara) of Morgan, Utah; Ronald Betournay (Shirley) of Eugene, Oregon; and Duane Betournay (Cheri) of Salt Lake City, Utah; her Sister Jan Pennell of Colfax, Washington and her Brother Len Koole of Lewiston, Idaho. Mom has 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Mom's energy and efforts were always focused on her husband and family. She loved to raise flowers in her garden area. Dad had the vegetable garden but mom was in charge of the ornamental garden. One thing we learned early was that if a bush, tree or flower didn't look good it was shortly dug up. Dad would always say "why do we plant these bushes to turn around in a few years and dig them up"? Mom was always involved with school, church and the local hospital where she volunteered for many positions and enjoyed them all. Mom will always be remembered for her pure love for her husband. They were truly a couple. Funeral services will be held at the Blackmer Funeral Home in Grangeville, Idaho March 7th at 1 PM. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.holbrookmortuary.com.
