February 9, 1942 — February 12, 2009

"Vati, wir lieben dich"

Hyrum Mack Patten, our beloved father, grandfather, brother, and uncle passed away with his family by his side on February 12, 2009 due to complications after a long courageous battle with Inclusion Body Myositis. It was a testament to Mack that his family came from all over the country to be with him. Mack was born February 9, 1942 in Salt lake City, Utah to Ray and Minnie Patten. He graduated from South High School in 1960, and from the University of Utah in 1966. He served an LDS mission to the Austrian Mission from 1961 to 1963, where he developed a great love for the Austrian countryside. Mack married Elaine Burton on March 30, 1972. Together they raised Eight children; Aaron Jones (Kayt), Mathew Jones (deceased), Allison Glover (Marty), Emilie Hicks (Tom), Andrew Patten (Melissa), Charles Patten (Christina), Clark Patten and Whitney Patten (Susie). Dad had 19 grandkids and each of them loved to spend time with him. Dad had a great appreciation for classical music, literature, and the German culture. He was a smart, witty, and intelligent probing man. Mack taught at Skyline High School in Salt Lake City Utah for 30 years, where he touched the lives of many students that passed through the doors of his classroom. He served as an LDS church service missionary where he helped prepare numerous archives for the records of the church, a calling he enjoyed greatly. Mack enjoyed the company of everyone, especially his family. Dad loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and strived to follow the teachings of his Savior. Mack is preceded in death by his father Ray, his mother Minnie, son Matthew, and leaves a legacy of loving offspring. Services will be held Monday, February 16, 2009 at 12 noon at the Rosecrest 1st ward chapel, 3101 South 2300 East.
