Ivy Brown

August 23, 1917 — July 31, 2013

Ivy passed away on July 31, 2013 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born in Paul, Idaho to Frank Hart and Martha Ann Fowles Manning, the seventh of eight children. The family moved across the Snake River to Burley when Ivy was eight.
Her parents and siblings made a life good during the depression on a farm and in a house without modern conveniences. But there was always plenty of good fruit, vegetables, butter, milk and lots of hard work. Clothes were ‘made over’ and passed down to Ivy, the last girl.
Ivy grew up in a musical family. She sang in the Mikado, Hansel and Gretel and the Messiah at BYU. She loved music her entire life. She was elected the first female student body president of Burley High School, graduating in 1934. She attended BYU on a working scholarship that required ironing sheets and grading papers. She finished her schooling at Albion Normal School as an elementary teacher.
Very adventurous for the time, as a young woman, she drove across the nation from California to New York with a friend. During WWII she worked at Hill Field and taught 2nd grade.
After a surprise meeting on the street of Ogden, a budding romance began with Folkman Brown. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1942, enjoying 55 years of marriage.
After Ivy had the first of their 3 daughters, they transferred to northern CA where they spent the next 20 yrs. They moved often during those years. As a lifetime active member of the LDS Church, Ivy serve as Relief Society president in California, Salt Lake City, and Denver as well as serving as a visiting teacher for 75 years, this was a particular joy to her.
Ivy served an LDS mission with her husband in the Independence MO visitor’s center where he served as the director.
Her interests included reading, gardening, sewing, painting, traveling, and making delicious meals for her family. Her love and loyalty to her husband, children, extended family and friends was an outstanding attribute which was greatly treasured by all who knew her.
Ivy is survived by 2 daughters: Kris (Patrice) Brown and Lora Lee (Gary) Heaton; 6 grandchildren: Camille Heaton, Gary Lee Heaton II, Richard (Elena) Heaton, Bradford Heaton, Rebekah Heaton, Suzanne (Jed) Heaton Maddocks, and 8 great-grandchildren.
Ivy was preceeded in death by her loving husband Folkman Brown and daughter Adele Brown.
Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday August 13 at Cottonwood Acres Ward, 981 Revere Circle, Murray, Ut. Friends and family may call from 6-8 pm, August 12 and an hour prior to services at the church. Interment will follow at the Ogden City Cemetery.
