Jack R. Ellerbe, age 94, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2026, in Payson, Utah.
Born on May 13, 1932, in Cheraw, South Carolina, Jack was the son of Edward C. Ellerbe and Janie R. Ellerbe Cole. He lived a life marked by service, hard work, and unwavering devotion to his country and his family. He proudly served in the United States Air Force for 20 years. Following his military service, he built a long career with Jacobsen Construction, earning the respect of coworkers through his dedication, integrity, and strong work ethic.
On September 2, 1963, Jack married the love of his life, Emily Mickelsen Ellerbe, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Together they built a loving home and shared many cherished years together.
He found great joy in spending time with his family and creating lasting memories. He enjoyed visiting his daughter and her family while they lived in Germany, traveling throughout Europe, and looked forward to taking his grandchildren on summer road trips, creating adventures they would remember for years to come.
At home, Jack could often be found enjoying a classic Western, especially if it starred John Wayne. He was rarely seen without a tape measure on his belt, always prepared if something needed measuring or fixing. Whether traveling with family, taking his grandchildren on road trips, or simply enjoying life's everyday moments, Jack was known for his quiet strength, dependable nature, and unwavering love for those around him. He will be remembered for his faithful service to his country, his steadfast character, his willingness to lend a helping hand, and the countless memories he created with family and friends.
Jack is survived by his son, John Michael Ellerbe Sr.; grandsons John Michael Ellerbe Jr. (Jamie), Beau Griffith (Kimmie), Colby Brown (Steph), and Shay Griffith (Andrea); granddaughters Chandra Radka (Charles) and Crystal Leavitt (Derrick); and several beloved great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Emily K. Mickelsen Ellerbe, and his daughter, Patricia Jane Griffith.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Mervyn S. Bennion Central Utah Veterans Home for the compassionate care, kindness, and dedicated service they provided to Jack during his time as a resident.
Funeral services will be held at Wasatch Lawn Memorial, 3115 Bengal Boulevard, Cottonwood Heights, Utah 84121, on Wednesday, July 8. A viewing for family and friends will begin at 9:00 a.m., with interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your local Department of Veterans Affairs facility or another organization supporting veterans in honor of Jack's lifelong love of and dedication to his country
