The world lost a great man today! Jack Louis Phillips was born in Murray, Utah to Maude Forbes and Louis Phillips on November 22, 1934, and died in Salt Lake City on October 3, 2014. He attended schools in Murray, Utah and Salt Lake City, Utah graduating from Murray High School in 1953. Jack graduated from the University of Utah where he was affiliated with Sigma Chi Fraternity. Jack graduated with a Business degree and received a commission in the U.S. Army in 1957. He served in the Army Reserves for twenty-two years, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Jack began his career at Pacific Northwest Pipe. From there he worked for Hercules Aerospace where he spent many happy years and made many lifelong friends; he retired in 1994.
Jack loved sports. He supported the University of Utah basketball and football teams and was a proud member of the Crimson Club with season tickets dating from the opening of the Special Events Center. Jack was an avid golfer; it was his lifetime passion. His father taught him to play when he was a young boy, and he loved spending time with his friends and his sons on the golf course. Jack played in and won many golf tournaments throughout his life. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions. Jack loved his family. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. He found great pleasure in their successes and shared the sadness in their challenges.
Jack married Donna Poulton in the Salt Lake Temple on May 4, 1960. They are the parents of Susan (Brett) Hollberg, Scott Phillips, Sheryl Johnson (Greg) Proffit, and Steven Phillips. He is survived by his wife, children and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronald Phillips.
