Jacob Dewaal

Jacob DeWaal, 96, passed away peacefully of natural causes at his home in Holladay, Utah early in the morning of Monday, January 23, 2017 surrounded by his family.  Jake was born December 14, 1920 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Martinus and Anna Maria Brouws DeWaal, and the youngest of ten children.  He graduated from South High, then served an LDS mission in California before marrying his sweetheart, Barbara Alison Cheshire in the Salt Lake Temple November 4, 1942.  He was a veteran having served in the Navy during WWII.

Jake loved hunting, fishing and camping.  His years as a Scoutmaster gave him many opportunities to pass this love on to hundreds of boys.  He was able to enjoy national jamborees with each of his sons and was recipient of the Silver Beaver award.

His friendly and outgoing nature served him well as he and Barbara devoted much of their lives to missionary work.  Together, later in life, they served LDS missions in the Philippines, Kenya, Detroit, on Welfare Square and Salt Lake City (Inner City).

Preceded in death by two sons, Howard and Clark (Lorraine), as well as his five brothers and four sisters, he is survived by his wife of 74 years, Barbara, his children Claudia (David) Wright, Alice (Larry) Riddle, Michael (Mary Ann) DeWaal, Matthew (Jolene) DeWaal, Ilauna (Danny) Parks, Adam (Jenny) DeWaal, Anderson Thomas, thirty-two grandchildren, sixty great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

The family expresses their gratitude to Harmony Hospice, particularly to Laura and Rudy for their constant and loving care during the last four months of Jake's life.

A viewing will be held Thursday, January 26, 2017, 6-7:30 pm at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, in Salt Lake City.  The funeral will be on Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Olympus 8th Ward Chapel, 2700 East 4500 South, at 11 am with a viewing prior to the service from 10:00-10:45 am.  Interment will be at the Holladay Memorial Cemetery.
