James Herbert Chance, age 78, passed away on March 12, 2026, in Eagle Mountain, Utah. He was born on March 30, 1947, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to John Matthew Chance (Cianciarulo) and Eunice Isabelle Katzer.
James married Thressa Jessop on June 27, 1992.
James was known for his "gift of gab" and his warm, likable personality. A proud Air Force veteran, he served his country during the Vietnam War. His faith was important to him, and he spent much of his life studying religion and church history.
He had a deep curiosity about the world around him. From the early days of the internet, he was fascinated by technology and enjoyed learning how to navigate it. He was passionate about genealogy and family history, and he kept a close eye on current events and world news.
James was also an avid chess player and loved teaching his children the game. He was a natural storyteller, often sharing memories from his childhood and his time in the military. Above all, he loved his family deeply.
James is survived by his wife, Thressa; his brother, John; and his 15 children: James D (Debi), Paul, Michelle, David, Daniel (Heather), Amanda (Mike) Bishop, Jacob (Lori), Jared (Coral), Jessica (Troy) Gonzalez, Michael (Emily), Marie, Melinda (Jonathan) Wood, Rachel, Emily, and Kristina; as well as 31 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Eunice, and his brother, Philip.
