James Hensley

James Ray "Jim" Hensley, age 95, passed away peacefully in his home in West Valley City, Utah on November 17, 2025. Born on May 23, 1930 in Salt Lake County, Jim remained a lifelong resident of the community he loved. 

Jim proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. He often spoke about his time driving tanks, sharing his stories with humor and pride. His military service meant a great deal to him, and he took immense pride in the continued service of his son and three great-grandsons who followed his example. 

After returning home, Jim dedicated most of his adult life to working in waste management. His strong work ethic, loyalty, and reliability reflected the values he carried throughout his entire life. 

More than anything, Jim loved being a father and watching over his family. He was a gentle, forgiving, and deeply loving man whose door was always open, literally. Jim never locked his door because anyone who came to visit was welcome. Many people lovingly called him "Papa", whether they were related to him or not. His kitchen counter was a gathering place for conversation, coffee, war stories, jokes, and the warmth of his generous spirit. 

Becoming a grandfather was one of the greatest joys of Jim's life. His oldest granddaughter, the one who first made him "Papa", held a very special place in his heart. She was the apple of his eye, and their bond was one he treasured dearly throughout his life. 

Jim is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia Hensley, who passed in August 2024. He missed her dearly and often spoke of how much he longed to see her again. The family takes comfort in knowing they are now reunited. He is also preceded in death by three brothers (including one who passed in infancy), one sister, and his parents. 

He is survived by his brother, Don Hensley; his four children; six grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Jim also leaves behind countless friends, neighbors, and honorary family members who considered him their Papa. 

A charitable and compassionate man, Jim supported many causes, especially those devoted to children, faith, and the humane society. He lived his life with old-fashioned values, strong morals, and a deep sense of family honor. Jim believed in making good choices, loving one another, and leading by example. Through his actions, he showed his family what it meant to live with honor, dignity, and kindness.

Jim's legacy lives on in the stories he shared, the love he gave, and the generations of family he guided. He will be remembered forever for his generosity, humor, forgiveness, immense strength, and unconditional love.
